The base material is a fascinating story with fans across all ages and cultures. This story deserved a dedicated, careful adaptation. Unfortunately, it was handled clumsily, and the product is a sadly inept example of filmmaking.

A few moments, such as Edward’s furious battle to protect Bella in the last act, provide a human spark to the fake ashes of the film. But the rest is lifeless, and it really didn’t have to be.

Science fiction is a genre that repeatedly turns to the human element of scientific progress and the dangers it represents to the world as we know it in order to make intriguing stories. “Splice” isn’t about the genetic experiment from which the plot is born, but about the neuroses it highlights in its initiators. However, even though many of the necessary inputs of the sci-fi formula are present, “Splice” doesn’t recombine them to create a memorable experience that viewers can care about.

Noah Baumbach’s “Greenberg” is frustrating, even depressing at times, but that’s entirely the point. Striking a delicate balance between comedy and gloom, “Greenberg” follows its namesake, Roger Greenberg (Ben Stiller, “Night at the Museum”), a 40-year-old carpenter and former musician fresh off a mental breakdown returning to his hometown of Los Angeles.
